Radiation-induced adverse biologic effects pose a significant health risk to astronauts during and after extended space travel. Two of the major components of space radiation encountered by astronauts in space are protons and high mass (H), high atomic number (Z), and high energy (E) particles known as HZE particles. We have previously demonstrated that both protons and HZE particles are capable of inducing oxidative stress in cultured human breast epithelial cells and decreasing the total antioxidant concentration in serum/plasma of irradiated animals.
