Even the mainstream medical community has promoted some hormones—particularly estrogen—as panaceas. But relatively shortterm studies of estrogen as a means of reducing cardiovascular disease had mixed results, and the Women’s Health Initiative subsequently found that estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women was associated with increased risk of stroke5 and impaired cognitive function.6 Controversy remains, but estrogen therapy is not a cure for aging.
